What is SEBI?, SEBI full form, Functions of SEBI
Ans: The Securities and Exchange Board of India is the most
important regulatory board of Securities in India. It was established in 1988 and on 30th January 1992 it was given statutory power or legal power under SEBI Act 1992 (Securities and Exchange Board of India Act 1992 is an act of the parliament of India enacted for regulation and development of securities market in India). The government of India made it an autonomous body on 12th of April 1992. Its head office is in Bandra Kurla Complex Mumbai. It also has four zonal offices New Delhi in the north, Kolkata in the east, Chennai in the south and Ahmedabad in the west. Its present chairman is Ajay Tyagi appointed on 10th January 2017 and took charge of the office in March 2017 and the former chairman was U.K.Sharma (18 Feb 2011- 10 Feb 2017). They are appointed by the government of India. 

SEBI Board:

      The board contains a total of nine members out of which two are appointed by union ministry, one member from reserve bank of India, five members are selected by union government of India in which three members should be permanent members. 

      The functions of SEBI are to monitor:

  • The securities market of India or we can say stock market. It regulates and monitors the procedures of new companies entering the market. 
  • It works for the welfare of shareholder and provides security to the investment of the investors.
  • It works for regulation of foreign exchange market or currency trading.
